THEATRE 102 Acting for the Opera Credit: 1
Students receive basic foundation of acting technique. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply their tools in practice and articulate their process throughout the semester. The course is designed for the coordination of music and acting with particular emphasis on training the singing actor.
Prerequisites: Bachelor of Music: Music Performance-Voice Option major.
THEATRE 105 Introduction to Theatre Practice: Presence, Stories, and Connection Credits: 3
This course is designed for students who are entering the UMKC Conservatory as Theatre majors, to support the creation of community, explore the art of presence through storytelling, and connect incoming students more deeply with each other and with the vibrant UMKC and Kansas City artistic communities.

THEATRE 110 Acting I Credits: 3
This course introduces foundational acting techniques to develop students' ability to create authentic and engaging performances. Students will explore acting principles, character development, ensemble collaboration, and improvisation while building physical and vocal expressiveness. Through warm-ups, games, ensemble work, analysis and live performances, the course aims to develop students’ awareness, confidence, spontaneity, and understanding of foundational acting techniques.
Prerequisites: Must be Theatre BA, Theatre Minor, Integrated Arts Minor, or Musical Theatre Certificate student
THEATRE 113 Introduction To Technical Production Credits: 3
An introduction to the technical production process with emphasis on production organization, planning and scenic construction techniques. Required laboratory work.
THEATRE 114 Introduction to Costume Technology Credits: 3
This introductory course explores the technical skills and craftsmanship essential for creating theatrical costumes. Students will learn techniques in sewing and pattern drafting. Through hands-on projects, students will gain practical experience in costume assembly, alteration, and maintenance. The course prepares students for further study in costume design and production within the performing arts.

An introduction to the basic principles and techniques of lighting and sound design and technology in the Theatre.
THEATRE 121 Oral Interpretation Of Literature Credits: 3
Principles of interpretation, analysis and oral reading of prose and poetry. Emphasis upon platform performance: body language, vocal control and performance techniques.
THEATRE 130 Making Theatre Credits: 3
A semester-long exploration of the creative processes incorporated for the making of live theatrical entertainment. The disciplines of collaboration, conceptualization, and communication as fundamental to potentially successful events are studied, discussed and evaluated throughout this course.

THEATRE 180 Theatre Practicum Credit: 1
The course requires involvement with productions in the Conservatory. Students will learn the responsibilities and processes of preparing and executing a live theatrical production. Depending on specialty, students will work backstage, in one of the studios, or in some other capacity as defined and agreed upon by the area coordinator.
THEATRE 200 Script Analysis Credits: 3
The class focuses on reading a script theatrically with a view to mounting a coherent production. Through careful, intensive reading of a variety of plays students study form, structure, genre, character, language, theme, and action as components of a text that provide the theatre artist with the tools for the creation a theatrical production.
THEATRE 210 Introduction To Design For The Theater Credits: 3
An introduction to aesthetics and design for the theater in the areas of scenery, costume, lighting and sound. The emphasis is upon the theory, vocabulary, form, style, historical influences and process in each area. Attendance at theater productions is required. Course is taught by design faculty from each area.
THEATRE 295 Voice for the Actor Credits: 3
Training in voice and articulation and the techniques of adaptation to the needs of the artist-performer in the theatre: exercises to free the voice, develop effective breathing, tone production, articulation, flexibility of vocal production, and projection.
Prerequisites: THEATRE 110.
THEATRE 298 Movement For Actors Credits: 3
Basic movement training including relaxation and alignment techniques, exercises to increase physical facility and skills to enhance rhythmic coordination and physical characterization.

THEATRE 301 Theatre: Production/Performance Role Credits: 0-1
THEATRE 301 provides students the opportunity to get course credit for their involvement in UMKC Conservatory productions, either in performance or through a major design or technology assignment. This course challenges students to build and maintain professional approaches to their work in production.
Prerequisites: Students must FIRST be cast in a show or assigned a major production role to enroll in this course.
THEATRE 315 Acting II Credits: 3
Course builds on the Acting I content to introduce students to textual analysis, in-depth characterization, and building a role.

THEATRE 317 Scene Design Credits: 3
Introduces the mechanics of layout: perspective, basic drafting techniques, front elevation and floorplan execution. Second half of the semester emphasizes scenic design as an art form. Recommended Preparation: THEATRE 113 and THEATRE 311.

Course builds on the Acting I and Acting II content to introduce students to deeper studies of period styles of acting, including Ancient Greek, Shakespearean, Restoration, and Neoclassical forms.

The study of the history of Non-European costume, with emphasis on the social and economic ramifications of costuming through the ages.
THEATRE 371 Stage Lighting Credits: 3
Stage Lighting is the study of light as a design element. Students will learn the foundation of lighting design theory, technical methods, and general theatrical procedure through lectures, laboratory and crew work. Theatrical genres will vary by semester.
THEATRE 372 Stage Lighting Technology Credits: 2
This course is a comprehensive study of contemporary technical equipment and its usage to actualize lighting design. Areas of emphasis include photometric, color and color theory, lighting control systems, lighting control operations, cueing techniques, data control of intelligent lighting equipment, lighting fixtures, dimming system, hand drafted light plot standards, CAD light plot drafting, lighting specific software programs, video and image projections, and optical special effects. Theatrical genres will vary by semester.
THEATRE 374 Professional Projection Design Credits: 3
This course in projection design for the performing arts will give students an overview of the discipline and introduce students to ideas and technologies used in this field. Through the three weekend sessions, students will learn the practical applications of projection design and the techniques of projection controls. Recommended preparation: basic, fundamental knowledge of computers and basic, fundamental knowledge of theatre designs.

THEATRE 378 Stage Management I Credits: 3
A functional analysis of the duties and responsibilities of the stage manager, with particular reference to the organization and conducting of rehearsals and performances, professional practices and union requirements. Requires student to be an assistant to a stage manager on a University or an KC Rep production. The first of a two-semester requirement in stage management for theater majors.
THEATRE 395 Speech for the Actor Credits: 3
Continuation of THEATRE 295 - Voice for the Actor, focusing on articulation and adapting to the needs of the artist-performer in the theatre: exercises to free the voice, develop effective breathing, tone production, articulation, flexibility of vocal production, and projection. Course also introduces actors to vocal dialect work.

A survey of trends in the American musical theatre from the 18th century to the present. This course includes material on creators and repertory in addition to the discussions of stylistic, analytical, social, aesthetic, and commercial aspects of musical theatre.

Introduces the mechanics of handling black and white media to develop three-dimensional technique with an emphasis on observational training and object drawing.

The practice of the theatrical costume design, leading to the preparation of designs for production, and the execution of designs in actual costuming for the stage.

Study of electronic principles used in audio and control devices. Concentrates on applying knowledge to using the equipment employed in the theatre such as sound-effect systems, inter-communication equipment, and includes a special section on the creation of sound and music for theatre productions.

THEATRE 499 Theatre Capstone Credit: 1
Each student plans and executes one significant project in the area of interest which demonstrates significant proficiency in one or more theatrical elements. Supervised by a member of the theatre faculty, the project incorporates research, documentation and a public exhibition.

THEATRE 5400 Branding for Theatre Designers Credits: 3
This course is a single semester journey in the creation of a unique brand identity and marketing toolkit for the live entertainment designer. Through guided practice students will reflect on their visibility, develop their marketing toolkit, reframe presentation abilities, and prioritize brand strategy.
THEATRE 5410 MFA Costume Design Studio Credits: 3
Costume Design Studio is a semester-long exploration of the processes and techniques used for the development of character design within the context of live production. The disciplines of collaboration, conceptualization, and communication are studied, discussed, and evaluated throughout the course as fundamental components of potentially successful costume design. Theoretical design projects will emphasize problem-solving skills. In Class Studio Sessions, students will develop text and character analysis, research strategies, clear and efficient presentation skills, and graphic skills.

THEATRE 5411 Digital Media for Costume Designers Credits: 3
This is a single semester course in digital illustration for costume designers in the live entertainment industry. Through guided practice and project work, participants will devise their digital workflow in Procreate for IPad, expanding upon their graphic skill set in the creation of highly evocative character design.
THEATRE 5412 Textiles & Fabric Modification Credits: 3
This is a single semester course in textile principles and the basic methods by which fabric is manipulated. Through individual projects and guided practice students will build a foundational knowledge of textiles, handwork, and machine modifications.
THEATRE 5413 Draping Credits: 3
This is a single semester course in the principles of draping garments for the live entertainment industry. Through guided practice, participants will build knowledge on the fundamentals of the drape method, expand upon their understanding of textiles, and incorporate the skills of draping with their pattern making methods.
THEATRE 5414 Flat Patterning Credits: 3
Flat Patterning is a single semester exploration of the skills and techniques of flat pattern drafting as they pertain to the live entertainment industry. Through guided practice and project work, participants will enhance their understanding of garment planning and production.
THEATRE 5415 Tailoring & Menswear Production Credits: 3
Tailoring is a single semester exploration of the skill and techniques of classic bespoke tailoring. Though contemporary technologies offer a speedy alternative to the classic method, participants of this course will be instructed in the ways of the old master of Seville Row. Through guided practice, participants will pattern, construct, fit, and finish a men’s vest and trousers.
THEATRE 5416 Mask Making & Craft Mediums Credits: 3
This is a single semester course focusing on the skills and techniques of mask making, casting and molding, and craft mediums as they pertain to the live entertainment industry. Through guided practice, participants will have the opportunity to expand on project and time management skills through the creation of three major mask projects.
THEATRE 5417 Fabric Dyeing & Painting Credits: 3
This is a single semester course in the in the variety of techniques used in dyeing and painting fabric for the live entertainment industry. Through guided practice and project work, participants will explore methods of silk painting, color matching, and yardage dyeing using Union and Acid Dyes.
THEATRE 5418 Wig Making & Styling Credits: 3
This is a single semester course in the principles of wig making and styling within the context of character design for live entertainment. Through guided practice students will learn to prepare and ventilate wigs and facial hair pieces, to style synthetic hair, and to plan and execute period styles.
THEATRE 5419 Millinery Credits: 3
Millinery is a single semester exploration of the skill and techniques used in the creation of hats for the live entertainment industry. Through guided practice and project work, participants will enhance their understanding of hat making and the various materials utilized in its craft.
THEATRE 5420 Graduate Stage Management Seminar Credits: 3
Students will work through the process and challenges of stage managing a production in today’s environment. The class is a combination of hands-on rehearsal and performance work, as well as in-person discussions on current topics of the industry and topics as they come up in the rehearsal hall and in the performance space.
Prerequisites: Must be an MFA Design and Technology student in the Conservatory
THEATRE 5422 Graduate Stage Management: LORT Credits: 3
This course examines contacts with the League of Resident Theaters (LORT) alongside the history and the reasons behind many of the rules associated with LORT contracts. In addition, this course will investigate how to interpret these contracts, compare them to contracts with other unions, and apply them in real scenarios.

The course serves as an investigation into how Auto-Cours techniques enable individuals to successfully collaborate within a devising group. We also explore structures for creating dynamic, theatrical events.

This course covers components of proper vocal techniques through the study of a variety of repertoires from the Musical Theatre genre. Topics include vocal anatomy & health, onset, space, breathing, resonance, vowels, diction, sight-singing, lyric interpretation, solo & group singing, acting through song, stage presence, audition & rehearsal techniques.

This course equips graduate acting students with the knowledge, tools, and professional practices necessary to build and sustain a career in the performing arts. Topics include marketing and branding, resumes and headshots, agents and casting, union membership, audition etiquette, financial literacy for artists, and how to develop a long-term career strategy.

THEATRE 5446 Master Class: Graduate Stage Combat Credits: 2
This course introduces graduate acting students to the foundational techniques of stage combat with a focus on unarmed (hand-to-hand) combat and rapier & dagger. Emphasis is placed on safety, storytelling, physical precision, and partnering. Students will explore how physical conflict reveals character, raises dramatic stakes, and serves the text. The course culminates in a choreographed performance piece demonstrating proficiency in both styles.

The course is an in-depth review of technologies in scenery, lighting and stage operations, expansion of that knowledge, and application of it to the individual class member's particular theatre. Classroom material is augmented by hands-on experience in a controlled laboratory situation. Students should have a prerequisite of a basic technical theatre course or considerable practical experience. This course can be repeated for credit.

Each section will deal with specific problems of design, such as period, line, silhouette, color and texture. Specific problems in design from realistic to stylized productions will be worked on by the students. The course may be taken once or twice by non-costume designers with the full cycle being required for costume emphasis.

This course is a survey of Western fashion from antiquity to the contemporary period, emphasizing the relationship between clothing and artistic, social, and political contexts. The course will be conducted through a variety of study methods including textbook readings, in-class discussion and critique, period research, and sketching.

THEATRE 5535 Technical Studies In Costuming And Makeup Credits: 3
(A,B,C) Concentration in one or more of the arts and crafts necessary to costume design. Areas to be chosen from include: fabric dyeing and painting, millinery, wig design and construction, latex prosthetic, and decorative accessories for the stage. May be repeated up to six hours with content change and permission of instructor.
THEATRE 5536 Professional Scene Design Studio Credits: 3
Professional Scene Design Studio is a series of courses constructed to develop the designer's skills from research and initial sketches to finished renderings, models and working drawings. Each successive section deals with problems of increasing complexity beginning with one-set realistic productions through unit-settings, stylization and multiple setting problems. The course is taken each semester of the program.

This course provides an overview of the trends in architecture, painting, sculpture, furniture, and decorative motifs, examining multiple periods throughout history. This course is lecture-based with many quizzes and tests.

A practicum course in scene painting techniques and execution. Introduction to painting equipment and supplies, priming and preparation of surfaces and materials, standard techniques for painting ornament.

A practicum course in scene painting techniques with emphasis on painting interior drops, exterior landscapes and three-dimensional pieces.
THEATRE 5545 Professional Acting Techniques I Credits: 3
Theatre games, exercises, mask work, and some scene study to develop the first year acting/directing class into a training ensemble, instill a clear and uniform vocabulary, heighten awareness, and begin concentrated skill work. The semester will culminate in a class project.
THEATRE 5546 Professional Acting Techniques II Credits: 3
Continuation of THEATER 5545 with emphasis on the application of the first semester's work through scene study of contemporary plays and monologues.

Concentration on non-naturalistic styles. Work on scenes from Shakespeare and other classical playwrights.

A contemporary scene study class for actors. Actors test their acquired process skills with major emphasis placed on characterization.

Linear analysis of selected prose dramas with concentration on character delineation, images and motivation for actors and directors.
THEATRE 5564 Text Analysis II Credits: 3
Continuation of THEATRE 5563 with emphasis on verse plays. Selected playwrights from the Greek and Elizabethan periods will be included along with modern verse dramatists.
THEATRE 5565 Introduction To Professional Directing Credits: 3
The first part of the class is devoted to an intensive study of various and diverse concepts related to the dramatic experience by dramatists, critics, and directors. The class also examines current production methods and practices for today's functioning professional director. Systems related to stage management and actors are investigated.
THEATRE 5567 Professional Directing Practicum Credits: 3
This class will move from concept to production. Work will revolve around the presentation of production concept statements in which the director will select, organize and articulate the theatrical substance in support of his or her chosen concept. Intensive analysis will lead to the development of an image/metaphor for production. Term will include presentation of a full book justifying concept choices for scenic, costume, music and dance, and, finally, full production.

This course examines various uses of digital and immersive media throughout the performance industry through a variety of lenses. Focus will be on the manipulation and creation of projected images, the fundamental use and control of automated projectors, and the design techniques required to interpret and materialize digital experiences in live performance, using state-of-the-art projection equipment and control consoles. This course will be repeated each semester throughout the graduate student’s time in the program, engaging with new materials and techniques in each Studio.

This course examines the techniques of theatrical projection design. Focus will be on the manipulation of projected images, and the fundamental use and control of automated projectors. This hands-on laboratory class will instruct students in the use of state of the art projection equipment and control consoles.

This class will teach students how to design projections. Students will learn the practical applications of projection design as well as the theoretical and critical thinking necessary to successfully complete a projection design assignment. This class will culminate with the presentation of an assigned projection design or a realized projection design.

This is a graduate introductory course to lighting design and technology. The class will be divided into three sections: foundations of lighting design, electricity and equipment, and production lighting skills. (A,B,C,D) The theatre technician and designer are dependent on a wide range of materials in the creation of their art. Each semester the student will pursue detailed study of a material area (i.e., wood, metal, plastics, textiles), the processes of its usage and its related process-products (i.e., adhesives, paints, dyes, etc.). Field trips and hands-on laboratory work are integral to the course.

THEATRE 5585 Advanced Technical Drafting Credits: 3
An intensive drafting course required for Design/Tech M.F.A. candidates with emphasis in technology. The course aims to equip the student to prepare clear shop working drawings from designer elevations. Topics include both conceptual planning techniques and developing mechanical drawing skills. One hour lecture, four lab hours, and extensive outside preparation.
THEATRE 5586 Structural Design for the Stage Credits: 3
A course in the structural design of scenic elements. The student learns to work within the visual restrictions imposed by the designer to build structures that will bear given load requirements with a minimum of deflection. Basic engineering and load analysis principles are studied and applied in the design procedure to find the best possible solutions in terms of strength, weight, safety and cost.

Also, interns will have some responsibility in technical areas such as change-over, props, costume, running crew, and stage management. Directing interns may assist director or assistant stage manager.
