Student Learning Outcomes

Students graduating from this program will:

  • Integrate fundamental concepts in anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology and physiology.
  • Apply basic biological sciences knowledge to clinical situations.
  • Create a professional and reflective professional school application.
  • Develop strategies for conducting professional school interviews.
  • Master fundamental concepts in biochemistry, anatomy, and physiology. (Rural Medicine Emphasis)
  • Develop strategies and portfolios for applying to medical and allied health programs. (Rural Medicine Emphasis)
  • Identify rural issues, appraise rural health problems, and complete specific preparatory training activities. (Rural Medicine Emphasis)
  • Apply current biomedical science techniques and analyze relationships in existing patient datasets. (Rural Medicine Emphasis)
  • Develop a biomedical science capstone project. (Rural Medicine Emphasis)

Admissions

Applicants will select MA in Biology or MA in Biology - Rural Medicine Emphasis at the time of application. There are separate admissions committees. 

Admission requirements applicable to both:

  • BS or BA in Biology or Chemistry (preferred).
  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (preferred).
  • Equivalent coursework required for admissions depends on specified professional program of choice.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Personal statement explaining purpose of application, including specified professional program and rationale for rural medicine emphasis if applicable.
  • A current C.V.

Location Requirements

For the MA Biology:
Students will take a mix of in-person and online classes. Attendance at all in-person classes is required on the UMKC campus (Volker and Health Science District).

MA Biology-Rural Medicine:
Students will take a mix of in-person and online classes. Attendance at all in-person classes is required on the UMKC School of Medicine regional campus located in St. Joseph, Missouri.
